Reading has an important effect on the ability to 'mentalise', i.e. to attribute different knowledge, emotions, mental states and beliefs to others. others knowledge, emotions, mental states and beliefs different from our own. In this sense worrying are the data on the diffusion of reading in Italy, which today has a 30% share of functional illiterates.
