Georg Foster, Essay, Anglo-German Literary TransferAbstract
Georg Forster, polygraph and polyglot, circumnavigator of the world together with James Cook, scientist and translator, eventually Jacobin, was among the most influential and best-loved writers for the German Romantic generation. At the end of the 18th century Friedrich Schlegel considered him as the ‘social writer’ par excellence. As an author of detailed reviews on English literature, Forster did not hide his debts and admiration for Anglo-Saxon essayism, which he traced back to a national matrix, whose peculiar sense for concreteness and dialogicity contrasted with Teutonic pedantism. If Schlegel uses the term Essay to denote a mode of writing somewhere between criticism and poetry, he certainly does so under the influence of this great master, to whom he unsurprisingly dedicates a famous essay. The aim of this study is to highlight the stylistic, rhetorical and poetological elements elaborated in this Anglo-German transfer process, in which essayism emerges as a mode of writing ‘beyond borders’. By highlighting the role of Forster’s work in the history of the German essay, we hope to contribute to the comparative study of essayistic traditions across cultures and languages.
