An etymological proposal for “mascarpone” and “mascarpa”

Abstract

The article summarizes and discusses the seven proposals made so far regarding the etymon of the Lombard word “mascarpa” and its derivative “mascarpone”. Since none of these proposals is satisfactory, a further hypothesis is advanced, that the word “mascarpa” may trace back to the pre-Latin base *mas-kar-ap-.
