Abstract

This paper proposes a reading of J.M. Coetzee’s Elizabeth Costello (2003) through the lens of heteronymy, a concept first introduced by Fernando Pessoa, and situates the novel within the literary tradition of ‘fictional self-portraits’, a genre that merges essayistic argumentation with realist narrative techniques. By adopting the voice of the protagonist, Coetzee employs a literary ‘thinking device’ that enables conceptual and emotional explorations not typically accessible through conventional novelistic or essayistic forms.
